Swanton on the Move: Press Release – May 28th, 2014

A banner stating “Swanton on the Move” adorned the park in downtown Swanton on the morning of May 24th as more than 30 community members, young and not so young,  gathered to plant flowers that will beautify Swanton’s  landscape throughout the summer and fall.

Plenty of smiles and good will were exchanged among the group, many of whom had never met.   Young people from the Swanton Teen Center,  MVU and the elementary school worked side by side with people who have called Swanton home for decades.  When the new owner of St. Maries crossed the street to thank the participants by offering urns of coffee for the adults, chocolate milk for the kids and doughnuts for all, the party was complete.   As everyone enjoyed refreshments and assessed the results of their work, they knew that “Swanton on the Move” was more than a phrase on a banner! The project is one of many planned by the Special Projects Committee of the Swanton Enhancement Project.   Led by Sandy Kilburn and Marie Frey, with tremendous assistance and design help from the Village Public Works crew, Jeff Young, Hank Lambert and Hudak Farm and Gardens,  the volunteers tilled the soil, sorted the plants and dug their hands in the dirt as they filled five beds in the park, planters in front of Roy’s Insurance and the Chamber of Commerce and six boxes on the bridge.
